Three Village School District

Against tremendous pressure, Empire successfully passed a precedent setting law that required a major public university to pay property taxes.

Challenge:  The Three Village School District, located on Long Island stood to lose millions in property taxes.  Stony Brook University (SUNY Stony Brook), acquired private property for development that included private businesses.

Solution:  Our team met with legislators, agency heads and the governor’s office to explain our issue.  We drafted legislation that would require the University to pay property taxes to the school district on the land acquired by Stony Brook, which was taken off of the tax rolls.

Result: Empire drafted and successfully passed a law requiring Stony Brook University to pay PILOT payment to the Three Village School District in perpetuity.
